It is well-known that the Southwest of France offers some of the best value wines in Europe and no secret that I am always impressed by wines from Jean-Paul Mas, one of the high profile producers in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Jean-Paul Mas wines are widely available in the UK either under the Mas label or under supermarkets' own brands. Two that immediately come to mind are Paul Mas Réserve Rouge in Waitrose and Sainsbury's Languedoc Rouge, Taste the Difference. I wonder why then it has taken me so long to get round to buying and trying this Paul Mas Réserve Viognier in Tesco which if you are quick you can get for £8 instead of £10 with a Clubcard until next Monday (20 February 2023). It featured in Jane MacQuitty's '50 best wines for winter' in the Times back in December and has been well received by other reviewers too. Floral on the nose it exudes the ripe stone fruit flavours typical of the Viognier grape. It is nicely balanced with a hint of oak reflecting a short period of barrel ageing after fermentation. In short, this is a well-crafted, easy drinking quality wine and a particularly good buy for the next week with the Clubcard discount.
