Picked up an absolute bargain in Sainsburys this morning - the Chateau Auzines Corbières in the Taste the Difference Discovery Collection for a remarkable price of £5 rather than £10. Clearly they're trying to get rid of the last few bottles but this is a seriously impressive wine, well above your usual own label Corbières in any supermarket. The Taste the Difference Discovery Collection range was a new initiative in Sainsburys in late 2021 offering distinctive and unique wines largely sourced from existing suppliers. The thinking behind this development is that it is a way of showcasing small parcels of around 15,000 bottles from suppliers when typically wines in the larger Taste the Difference range have a minimum of 50-60k guaranteed bottles. In this case, the wine is a limited edition red from the well-respected Laurent Miquel winemakers in the heart of the Languedoc- Roussillon production area in SW France.
The wine claims to be medium bodied (although I would contend it's nearer full bodied) and it weighs in at quite a hefty 14.5% abv. Made from 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache it is close on the popular GSM blend in SW France although this case distinctly led by the Syrah grape. As such, it would appeal to those who enjoy hefty 'shiraz' wines, reflecting the New World name for the syrah grape.
This wine was picked out by Fiona Beckett in the Guardian in October as "the kind of wine you want to drink after an evening out in the cold, whether that's watching fireworks or stuck on a platform waiting for a delayed train". Writing this in below zero temperatures tonight I can fully endorse that recommendation!
Anyway, good luck with finding it. As I write it is still listed £10 reduced to £5 on Sainsburys website but for how long I do not have much hope. Buy it if you can!
