Waitrose shops are in the middle of their latest wine promotion and as always there is a wide variety of discounted wines. This is our nearest supermarket which makes it handy and, although the website lists all the discounted lines, it is always nice to go and see what is actually in stock in the local branch. There are a few wines that I always look out for in these promotions and I am not disappointed to see some of my favourites included this time round. If you happen to be near a Waitrose before the end of October pop in and see if you can find any of these four. You will not be disappointed.
Les Niviéres Saumur Loire, France 12.5% - £7.99 (down from £9.99)
A medium bodied red wine from the Loire Valley made from 100% Cabernet Franc. The wine has strong black berry fruit with hints of herbs and spices. Although red, it could benefit from a little chilling as it would typically be served in the area.
Paul Mas Réserve Languedoc Rouge 14% - £6.99 (down from £8.99)
A good deep red, easy drinking everyday wine from a large and successful producer in the SW of France (The Sainsburys Taste the Difference Languedoc red is from the same producer but IMO not quite as good). Made from the classic 'GSM' blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Moudèvre grapes the resulting wine is rich and soft with strong dark fruit flavours.
Graham Beck Chardonnay/Pinot Noir Brut 12% - £10.99 (down from £10.99)
A sparkling wine from a major player in South Africa wine. It is made by the bottle fermented 'Cap Classique' method (the same as Champagne and with sparking crémant wines across France) which produces a fresh and fruity style with a good balance between acidity and sweetness. In my opinion the small difference between the discounted price and a supermarket bottle of Prosecco is well worth paying.
Pecorino Terre di Chieti IGP - £5.99 (down from £7.99)
A remarkably inexpensive white wine from the Marche region on the Adriatic coast of Italy and worth buying for the label alone! (Do a quick Google search if you want to know why it features a sheep and try not to confuse with pecorino cheese with the same name). This is a crisp, dry and unpretentious wine which is excellent on its own or with simple food.
